Cabernet Franc 2003 – unfiltered
Made from premium grapes and only in excellent vintages this is the Malatinszky winery’s flagship wine, and one of Hungary’s finest examples of this grape’s potential. With subtle hints of oak, this wine displays fine elegance and structure, massive aromas and a fruity taste characterised by berries, plums, and currants. This is a grand wine suited to long cellaring.

Cabernet franc grows ideally on clay and clay-limestone soils. In Diud, the top soil is constituted with clay silt texture on a limestone motherrock. The soil is giving a perfect maturity to the cabernet franc always entailing the hydric stress so beneficial to the cabernet franc on the right moment , even on wet years. The exceptional 2003 year was particularly warm and dry. On these conditions, the result is just a very elegant, fruty and complex wine.

Tasting:
very clean and intense, fine oak with slight roasted coffee aroma mineral, mentholated with strong red fruit aromas while agitating. The attack is soft, evolution round and structured with an amazing lenght and aromatic persistancy. Very fine expression of the cabernet franc with a rare concentration, sign of the excelency of the terroir.

There is an awful lot going on here. The first touch on the nose suggests that it is a special wine, with classy yet animated mineral, smoky, tobacco style. The neurotic character can be sensed. This said the palate has an enthusiastic freshness, and precise elegant structure, contrary to what the nose might indicate. It is choleric, mature, not sybaritic, but full and creamy with a firm grip. Ripe tannins with a fruit edge. A great example of Cab.Franc. Terrific.
