Hungary: Its Fine Wines and Winemaker |
2006 |
||
MALATINSZKY Like Pál Debreczeni and Sándor Csányi, Csaba Malatinszky is an outsider attracted to Villány by the quality of its terroir and a strong conviction that it will produce great wines. The son of a nobleman impoverished by the land grab of 1948, young Malatinszky dreamed of a fine arts career, but the direction of his life was dramatically changed as a result of taking a wine Gundel restaurant. His interest, knowledge and experience grew rapidly. An enterprising young man, he opened Budapest's first specialist retail wine shop in December 1992, and used his contacts to supply his restaurant clients with wines which they liked but which they found hard to find. He then shrewdly registered Le Sommelier as a brand name, and selected the best wines he could find to be bottled for him under that label.

Welcome To The 21st Century |

Csaba Malatinszky, who makes wine under the label Malatinszky Kúria, followed a unique career path to becoming a winemaker. First he was head sommelier at Gundel, one of Budapest's very finest restaurants. Then he opened one of Budapest's First specialized wine stores and founded his own winery in Villány, a southern region known for red wine. In his sommelier days, Malatinszky honed his palate by tasting some of the world's best wines. He was greatly influenced by his visits to French wineries. "I visited the best châteaux in Medoc, worked on the harvest and had castings," says Malatinszky. "I wasn't exactly studying winemaking at that time, but I had many impressions of Médoc." |

"One of the most exciting producers reckons he is still seen by the locals as a young upstart. Csaba Malatinszky began his career as sommelier at Gundel - one of Budapest's top restaurants - and went on to open the first wine shop in the capital. He bought land here in 1991, attracted by the potential for the reds, and built his winery in 1997. His wines are beautifully crafted and show an elegance and finesse rarely seen in the area. His flagship Cabernet Franc is one of Hungary's finest, while he also makes an appealing if unusual blend of Cabernet and Pinot Noir, and a deliciously stylish Chardonnay. Visits to this modern and immaculate winery can be arranged by appointment, and Malatinszky speaks good English." read more... |
